Textural & Experimental Pastels

As a widely ranging artist who has had her fingers in weaving, clay, metal tooling, etc, I sometimes feel that my subject/inspiration deserves texture. I have found my own technique to satisfy that vision. It makes the process a lot longer, but I feel the results are worth it.

New Mexico Stillness

New Mexico Stillness

Textural Pastel on gator board of view from a Convent in Silver City New Mexico just before sundown. It was the first really textural piece that I did and inspired me to explore further.

Barley Cottage

Barley Cottage

I was on Whidbey Island, Wa- and exploring at sunset. I had to take a photo of this view- there was not enough time to paint on site. Back in the studio, I sculpted the underlayment and used every sunset toned pastel in the box! This won an award at International Pastel Show and is now in a Private Collection.

Muir's Paradise

Muir's Paradise

A large Pastel with intricately textured gator board of the high alpine wildflower meadows above Paradise- included in PAWA Show and book "Meadows to Mountains". Some local climbers were amazed at my accuracy showing their favorite ascent route.

Back Road to Chimayo

Back Road to Chimayo

Massive roadside trees along a deserted gravel road west of Santa Fe at High Noon- and I only had time for a quick photo. As luck would have it, the road was washed out further on- no Chimayo visit this time. I did access it another time from Taos- it is a very special place.

Tidepool Refracted

Tidepool Refracted

Fun abstracted view of a tidepool with actual sculpted barnacles! The colors bring to life the sunny summer days on Puget Sound.

Deconstructing Driftwood

Deconstructing Driftwood

I took a note from my own class curriculum to create this piece on custom textured gator board. I used a limited palette to play up the positive and negative space.

Lupine Spires

Lupine Spires

Abstracted composition of Russel Lupines on textured and gessoed foam core. This piece was also in the "cutting edge" Pastel show at Blue Horse gallery in Bellingham.

Happy Day at Crocket Lake

Happy Day at Crocket Lake

The day after the gale at Whidbey Island, came a mellow sun filled glorious noon. All seemed steamy, warm, and sun-touched and I worked quickly to capture the warmth! This piece was chosen to be part of the US Open Exhibit at Pacific NW Art School.

Stranded "By the Wind Sailors"

Stranded "By the Wind Sailors"

Rare stranding on the NW Coast of "By the Wind Sailors" that made a unique textural composition on the sand. Textured surface on Gator Board.

The Light Thru the Forest

The Light Thru the Forest

I wanted to play up the distinction between the foreground trunks and chose built up texture to help with that.

Sawtooth Summer

Sawtooth Summer

I took the reference photo for this piece the same day I painted Mt Rainier. I painted the scene in texture first on gator board- then added pumice ground before I applied any pastels.

Foggy View to North Head Light

Foggy View to North Head Light

I used a textured underlayment to enhance this misty view from the jetty across to the North Head Lighthouse. This is a studio pastel done from plein air piece accomplished at Cape Disappointment State Park, Wa. It was part of the Plein Air Washington State Parks Show and book.
