Gardens Galore

I am also a crazy gardener- I have been an Organic Gardener since 1963 when I read Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring". I love designing gardens, finding interesting plants and growing our favorite fruits and veggies. I have been "Artist in the Garden" and a featured Garden on the Gig Harbor Garden Tour for many years. I have doing some "plant portraits" lately- I am always out with my camera to capture the odd specimen.

I had some really amazing sunflowers at the old house. I did this from a photo I had taken using pan pastels- they are really fun to use!

Coleus Calypso

Coleus Calypso

One of my favorite plants- Coleus! I love the long lasting colors and exuberant leaves.I painted it from Dark to light- it was a challenge to get it right.

Shade Garden Sparklers

Shade Garden Sparklers

In my east side garden, there's a lot of shade- but in the summer it gets reflected light off the neighbor's windows- Wow- it's like spotlight! It was a challenge to get bright enough magenta to capture the moment.

Sunrise Hostas

Sunrise Hostas

I am always in the Garden early and spotted morning light on the blooming Hostas. This is a huge plant and it took a bit to compose my piece by showing "just enough". The Pan Pastels were really fun to enhance the wrinkled leaves on the Colourfix Paper.

Beach'n Garden

Beach'n Garden

I hosted the plein air group at my house. Everyone went exploring to find their muse. I stood on my front door mat and painted the Backside of the front garden and my herbs on the wall. Pan Pastel.

Octopus's Garden

Octopus's Garden

A Pastel of my HOT front garden, with Octopus bought at the PAL Summer Art Festival... no shade here!

G'Mornin' Trilliums

G'Mornin' Trilliums

The first year planted- and the bloomed in the shady eastside garden. To get them in any light, you have to get up early. it was really fun the paint them BIG!

It's Just Kale

It's Just Kale

I did a painting from a photo that I took of pots of decorative kale in the Garden Center. I brought it in to show some of my artist friends- everyone wanted to know what it was- It's just Kale.

Changing of the Guard

Changing of the Guard

The ferns each year retire last years fronds with their spore load as the new years fronds appear. I love their form and details.

Pushing Back Winter

Pushing Back Winter

I brought my reference photo to a NPS Paint in- and used pan pastels on sanded paper for this piece. It was fun to share pan pastels with artists who had not seen them in action.
